Earlier this year, I had the blessed opportunity to defend my faith (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) as well as my own personal convictions pertaining to marriage with a slippery member of the Church. I rejoiced in the opportunity to do so as standing for truth and righteousness is the only real evidence of religious conviction and testimony. Like the prophet Jeremiah in the Old Testament, I "felt His word like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I could not stay." I spoke in favor of Proposition 8 and of the divine sanctity of marriage. Some time has passed since that event but the same passion remains. Truth is truth after all and once spoken by the Lord does not ever change.
With this understanding do I now expose the falsehood because I cannot tolerate wickedness. The world now has it where "moral excellence" is considered bigoted, racist, sexist, and homophobic. The prophet Isaiah foresaw our day and man's corruptible nature when he exclaimed:
"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" - Isaiah 5:20
Oh the nothingness of man! How far we have descended toward the beast in our culture! Tragic. Like the Prophet Joseph Smith, one cannot sit still during times of moral crisis but choose instead to speak boldly in its defense, oftentimes offensively. One such occurrence happened during the early years of Church, a short time after its restoration, while Sidney Rigdon and the Prophet Joseph Smith were at a church in Philadelphia. The account is as follows:
“A very large church was opened for [Joseph Smith] to preach in, and about three thousand people assembled to hear him. Brother Rigdon spoke first, and dwelt on the Gospel, illustrating his doctrine by the Bible. When he was through, Brother Joseph arose like a lion about to roar; and being full of the Holy Ghost, spoke in great power, bearing testimony of the visions he had seen, the ministering of angels which he had enjoyed; and how he had found the plates of the Book of Mormon, and translated them by the gift and power of God. He commenced by saying: "If nobody else had the courage to testify of so glorious a message from Heaven, and of the finding of so glorious a record, he felt to do it in justice to the people, and leave the event with God.’ ”
Elder Pratt continued: “The entire congregation were astounded; electrified, as it were, and overwhelmed with the sense of the truth and power by which he spoke, and the wonders which he related. A lasting impression was made; many souls were gathered into the fold.”
What an experience! I would have loved to be present during such an event. But as you can see, standing firm for one's beliefs gives power to those who are not ashamed of theirs. Certainly, a bold testimony provides lasting impressions and indeed "electrifies" those who hear it with open hearts. It is my belief that those who attempt to dismiss the truth once it has been spoken plainly to them immediately lose their sandy platforms on which they have stood to deny God and His commandments as the rushing waves of Truth and Righteousness clear away all deception and fraud from their crusted eyes until standing becomes no longer possible. Now upon their knees, the humbled are now in a better position to "give in" to reason and truth.
On this point do I now relay the aforementioned experience I had with a group of people about my support for Proposition 8 and the sanctity of marriage. It read:
"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" - Isaiah 5:20

On this point do I now relay the aforementioned experience I had with a group of people about my support for Proposition 8 and the sanctity of marriage. It read:
"Gay marriage is contrary to the plan of God. The first line of the Family Proclamation to the World (http://lds.org/library/display/0,4945,161-1-11-1,FF.html) states that "marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God." To deny this fundamental truth is to also deny the most important fabric of society - the family. And once the family is gone, the moral strength of our nation crumbles. It is not surprising then why Karl Marx in his Communist Manifesto sought the destruction of the family as part of the triangle of control needed to enslave the masses. Sadly, we have become a nation who feels it is "over God" rather than "under Him." And the moment we forget Him, we begin our slippery, yet gradual descent into wickedness, which, never was happiness. The adversary is extremely cunning and will stop at nothing to destroy the family. With every broken home he gains more power. And as Alexander Pope once wisely stated, with every vice we begin to endure, we then pity, and finally embrace. It is in this slow and gradual fall into spiritual darkness that we find ourselves questioning what we once knew as true, and then the very doctrines of Christ themselves. As Doctrine of Covenants 121:16-17 states: "...but those who cry transgression do it because they are the servants of sin, and children of disobedience themselves." These are the last days and require us to choose whom we will serve. Will it be to serve God with all our heart, might, mind, and strength, or will we, as Elder Marion G. Romney stated, seek to "serve the Lord without offending the devil." One cannot serve two masters and do so with equal conviction. Or, as the prophet Elijah exclaimed to the wicked priests of Baal: "How long halt ye between two opinions?" (1 Kings 18:21) Many have said that adopting such "religious views" makes one narrow-minded and "unenlightened." Such fools could never be more complementary! Surely, to be "narrow-minded" is God-minded as the pathway to God is just that - straight and narrow! If gay marriage is to be passed, then so be it. Speak out in support of it with all the passion and zeal to be mustered if you so desire. But I for one, as a member of the narrow-minded religious right, stand firmly against it."
The world is worsening. Men lust and fail miserably in their attempts to find happiness in sin. The only happiness to be attained in this life is the joy experienced through Christ and His infinite Atonement. We have become a nation of sensitive Sally's who are past feeling and against all that is holy. And the only way we can be turned heavenward is if we are visited with "death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence (Hel 12:3). These are indeed the times that try men's souls and if WE do not stand for what is right, and preach and testify our convictions with those around us, then Satan gains momentum. And I for one, will not allow that to happen. Make Satan work uphill by fortifying yourself against all temptations in the same way Captain Moroni fortified the Nephite strongholds, with large mounds of dirt and high walls. If evil never rests, then let us overcome temptation ever the more through testimony and spiritual conviction. Perhaps Goethe said it best when he said, "Truth must be repeated again and again because error is constantly being preached round about us." To be sure, the failure of faith invariably precedes the failure of the will. I cannot stand for wickedness nor for the do-nothings who worry more about placating and compromising their first beliefs and values for the sake of the godless few. I pity them but only for a moment. My mission is clear: To defend God and the liberty of my country; two revolutionary concepts considered as offensive and terrible in their outcry in today's world than Aristotle's unpopular argument that the world was round and not flat.
Trust in God and in His uplifted arm of Virtue. If there are to be any heroic last stands on a religious scale today, I choose to fight to the end.
Long live the fighters
